The way that I view the world is this: I see cause as the source, and effect as the result. When I read a story to myself, I see the effect on the reader from the fact that “the main character got drunk and knocked himself out.” Cause and effect, or cause and result, is a little like that: in the story, the cause is the cause to me, but the effect is the effect to the reader.
I love this statement, cause and effect is a big part of what makes our stories feel real. To me, it’s a way that the story makes me feel like I’m a part of it. The way that when I get to the end of a story, the impact that I feel from the end to the beginning is as if my life has been an ongoing part of that story.
Yeah, cause and effect is one of the most underrated words in the English language. The reason is it ties the two parts of a story together. It’s not so much that you can’t infer cause and effect in a story, but that you can’t tell a story about something that makes you feel like someone else.
In a nutshell, cause and effect can be used to connect two things, events, or actions. However, in a story it is more like an emotional connection. There is no clear, one-sentence cause and effect in a story. Cause is a noun and effect a verb. Cause means something that causes something, like “the wind causes the rain”. Effect means something that effects something, like “the rain that falls when the wind blows”.
In a story, cause and effect are actually very important to the story. They are the means by which we create the feeling of being in control of our own lives. In contrast, a movie is an entirely different animal. Movies don’t have a “story” because they simply don’t tell stories.
