The first time I saw the term hydrophobic I thought it meant something completely different than what it does. The concept of hydrophobic compounds does not originate from chemistry. It is an organic molecule that is not soluble in water and is therefore a “non-polar” molecule.
The hydrophobic nature of various organic compounds is becoming increasingly important to the study of environmental chemistry because these compounds are now being found in a greater variety of substances. For example, a lot of the time in the water we drink (and in the food we eat) organic compounds are not found in the same proportions. There are many types of bacteria that are resistant to organic compounds because it is difficult for them to cross the hydrophobic barrier.
