I am a little concerned that my Gigabyte Z170MX Gaming 5 has been out of commission for a while now. On the plus side, it does seem to be getting a bit louder. It is, as of this writing, in its fourth day of being on the shelf.
I’m not sure what Gigabyte is doing with their gaming 5. My suspicion is that they simply aren’t releasing their boards, as their motherboard boards are now just the Gigabyte Z370M-A0-Gaming5. If this is true, then it would be reasonable to assume that we don’t have a Gigabyte Z170MX Gaming 5 as of yet.
Gigabyte is a company that likes to drop new products around the release date of their older products. I would think that Gigabyte might have just re-released their Z370M-Gaming board if they had just gotten the Z170MX Gaming motherboard out of the box. It seems unlikely though.
Well, I’m not sure. Gigabyte’s Z370M-Gaming motherboard has been out a while. There are lots of rumors that it has been sitting in warehouses for months. No one really knows what is happening with it.
The Gigabyte Z170MX Gaming motherboard is a dual-slot motherboard that can support both an Intel platform and an AMD platform. The Z170MX Gaming motherboard also has a PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot for a PCI-E 3.0 graphics card.
Most of the first generation Gigabyte Z170MX Gaming motherboards had two PCI-E slots, one for an Intel platform and a second for an AMD platform. The Gigabyte Z170MX Gaming motherboard is the first to have an open PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot that supports an AMD platform, but its PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot is not the same as the previous generation. It has a PCI-E 3.
The Z170MX Gaming motherboard’s PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot can be used as a PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot for an Intel platform. Other motherboard manufacturers have followed suit and introduced different PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots on their motherboards.
There are a few reasons why the PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots are not the same as the previous generation. The first is because the older generation PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots were PCI-E 3.0 x1 slots and the newer slots are PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots. A newer PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot doesn’t require any additional power. It’s all done through the motherboard’s motherboard support software.
The second reason is that the newer PCI-E 3.0 x16 slots are not backward compatible with the older slots. They are not the same as the previous generation. That means if your motherboard supports a PCI-E 3.0 x1 slot it will not work with a PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot.
There’s a difference between backwards compatibility and supporting old slots with new slots. Not supporting older slots with newer slots does not imply it is the old slots no longer are supported, it indicates it is the newer slots no longer are supported.
