I am sitting here writing this on a weekend. I am on hold for the next three and a half days. I am not on hold for the next five days, I am on hold for the next two. I am on hold for the next two weeks. I am on hold for the next five weeks. I am on hold for the next six months. On the other hand, I am on hold for the next few weeks. I am on hold for the next year.
The average length of stay in our memory care unit is three, maybe four months, though that’s not always the case. There can be other causes, like the hospital itself, staff turnover, and how we handle different patients.
Most people are on hold for the next 5 days, but at the end of that time, they sometimes get a bit more time to recover. During the first few weeks, there might be a few who are not on hold for the next 6 months, because they didn’t do anything that caused their memory loss to occur. However, these are the exceptions, and the average person will likely get on hold for the next two weeks.
In other words, people who have memory loss are the exception. The vast majority of patients who need to be in a hospital need to be there for the next 3-4 weeks or so.
As for whether people who need to be in a hospital will get on hold forever, the answer is a resounding yes. Anecdotally, I know a number of people who have been there for a few weeks, and some who have been there for more than a year. The vast majority of those who need to stay in hospital get on hold for the next few weeks.
Some people who have been there for months or longer have been known to forget to take their prescribed medication. These people can be a problem. Many of the patients in the memory care unit are in the last year of their treatment. You can see them sitting around, eating, talking about what they were doing when they became ill. They are mostly just being careful. They are trying to prevent these patients from having an accident or an infection, and they are doing it with the least amount of care.
One thing that is not mentioned very often when talking about memory care is how the residents are monitored. We can’t really go into all the details here because that would take up a whole post but we can tell you that the patients are monitored by nurses. The patients tend to be more vulnerable at night because they are less able to defend themselves if someone tries to harm them. The residents are in the care unit for around two weeks most of the time.
The average stay in the care unit is around two weeks. At that point you can go home, and you can start working on your projects. The residents will get their own beds but will still be monitored.
In contrast, the average length of stay at an inpatient psychiatric unit is only about three days. The patients in the unit tend to be more violent and aggressive, and are often aggressive towards staff members. It’s a really short length of stay, but it can be very scary.
This is why I’m always concerned about hospitals. When people are in a hospital, they are not in an environment where they can be themselves. They don’t get to know their family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. They are in a controlled environment where they can be aggressive and violent towards staff and other patients.
